18-APR-1971 :- Gavaskar makes 220 in second innings vs West Indies after 124 in first.

Sunil Gavaskar amassed 918 runs in his first year of Test cricket for India, which was only a sign for things to come. One of world cricket's greatest opening batsmen went on to become the first batsman in Test cricket to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket with the help of 34 Test hundreds.
  1. 116 vs West Indies, Georgetown, 1971: Gavaskar's first Test century in only his second Test helped India force a draw in the third Test against West Indies in the historic series of 1971.
  2. 117 not out vs West Indies, Bridgetown, 1971: Gavaskar tormented a lethal West Indies bowling attack for his second consecutive Test ton in the fourth Test, which resulted in an important draw.

  12. 127 vs Australia, Perth, 1977: Gavaskar twinkle-toes to a second-innings century at pacy Perth, but India once again end up on the losing side in a close contest by two wickets.
  13. 118 vs Australia, Melbourne, 1977: Gavaskar shakes off his duck in the first innings to score a century in the second, setting up a huge 222-run victory in the third Test to claw back in the series, but go down eventually in the five-Test series 3-2.
  14. 111 vs Pakistan, Karachi, 1978: Gavaskar scores his first Test ton in Pakistan against a hostile pace attack in the first innings of third and final Test. He scored 97 in the previous innings in the second Test at Lahore.
  15. 137 vs Pakistan, Karachi, 1978: Gavaskar backs up his century in the first innings with a ton in the second, but can't prevent Pakistan from winning the game and a series which also saw Kapil Dev make his debut for India.
  16. 205 vs West Indies, Mumbai, 1978: Gavaskar punishes West Indies yet again in the first innings of the first Test for his second double hundred. The match is drawn.
  17. 107 vs West Indies, Kolkata, 1978: By now West Indies are Gavaskar's favourite opponents. After a first-ball duck in the previous Test, he scores 107 in the first innings of the third Test.
  18. 182 not out vs West Indies, Kolkata, 1978: Gavaskar's insatiable appetite for big runs continues, as he rakes up his second century of the game with an unbeaten 182 as the match is drawn.
  19. 120 vs West Indies, Delhi, 1979: Gavaskar continues his stunning run of form with a century in the first innings of the fifth Test as India pile up a huge total. The West Indies are skittled out and made to follow-on, but avoid a defeat. India go on to win the six-Test series 1-0.
  20. 221 vs England, London, 1979: Gavaskar scores his third double century in the second innings of the final Test of the four-match series. Needing 438 to win, India can only manage a draw, closing nine runs short and with two wickets in hand. England win the series 1-0.
  21. 115 vs Australia, Delhi, 1979: With a 1-0 lead in the six-Test series, India proceed to Delhi for the fourth Test where the prolific Gavaskar scores his 21st Test hundred to force Australia to follow on. But they avoid a defeat.
  22. 123 vs Australia, Mumbai, 1979: Gavaskar's 123 along with Kirmani's hundred boosts India's total to set up an innings victory over Australia in the sixth and final Test, winning the series 2-0.
  23. 166 vs Pakistan, Chennai, 1980: Leading the six-Test series 1-0, India go into the fifth Test with Gavaskar yet to score big. And Gavaskar obliges with 166 in the first innings before Pakistan are bowled out cheaply in their second essay. India knock off their target for a 10-wicket win to close out the series 2-0.
  24. 172 vs England, Bangalore, 1981: India's victory in the first Test of the six-match series is enough to see them through with a 1-0 win, but not before England are subject to another Gavaskar masterclass in the second Test in Bangalore.
  25. 155 vs Sri Lanka, Chennai, 1982: Sri Lanka are put to the Gavaskar test as the master opener scores his 25th Test century but the match is drawn.
  26. 127 vs Pakistan, Faisalabad, 1983: India fail to stop the Pakistani juggernaut at home. India lose the six-game series 3-0, and in a heavy defeat in the third Test, Gavaskar is the lone warrior in the second innings, helping India avoid an innings defeat.
  27. 147 not out vs West Indies, Georgetown, 1983: Trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, India head to the third Test where Gavaskar is India's hero once again in a game in which two days were lost to heavy rain. India go on to lose the series 0-2.
  28. 103 not out vs Pakistan, Bangalore, 1983: Gavaskar does batting practice in the second innings of the first Test to force a draw. The three-Test series is drawn 0-0.
  29. 121 vs West Indies, Delhi, 1983: After beating the West Indies to be crowned world champions, West Indies come touring for revenge. Gavaskar equals Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test centuries in the drawn second Test in Delhi.
  30. 236 not out vs West Indies, Chennai, 1983: India are blown away 3-0 at home in the four-match series, but not before Gavaskar overtakes Bradman to become the leading centurion in Test cricket with No. 30. It's his fourth double century and his highest score in Test cricket.
  31. 166 not out vs Australia, Adelaide, 1985: Gavaskar carries his bat in the first innings of the drawn first Test at the Adelaide Oval.
  32. 172 vs Australia, Sydney, 1986: Gavaskar's second century of the tour ensures another draw as India and Australia share the three-Test series 0-0.
  33. 103 vs Australia, Mumbai, 1986: Australia's return tour to India also ends in a 0-0 draw. Gavaskar sets up India's massive total with a solid 103 in the third and final Test.
  34. 176 vs Sri Lanka, Kanpur, 1986: Gavaskar's last Test century, his 34th, is a big one against Sri Lanka after the visitors scored heavily in the first innings. Gavaskar's 176 forces a draw before India win the next to Tests to close the series 2-0.
Gavaskar twice got out in the ninetiees after scoring his final Test century. In his final Test series against Pakistan, Gavaskar scores 91 in the first Test before his 96 in his final innings brings an end to Gavaskar's glittering 16-year Test career. Gavaskar retires with most batting records against his name, with 10,122 runs and 34 Test centuries. His record of Test hundreds was overtaken by Sachin Tendulkar almost two decades later.
